Campbell Brothers’ Sawmill

The Campbell Legacy at Woodford

In 1949, after years of working in Jimna’s bustling timber industry, Robert and Oswald Campbell brought their skills to Woodford. Their sawmill, set near the railway line on Margaret Street, was a small but valuable part of the region’s sawmilling landscape. Like many family-run mills of the era, it served the local community during a time when timber was a vital industry. The brothers remained in town into the late 1950s before life took them in new directions, leaving behind another chapter in Woodford’s rich timber history.

Oswald worked as a lorry driver in Jimna before joining his brother Robert in starting a sawmilling business in Woodford. By 1963, Oswald had shifted gears—literally—working as a bus driver in Cleveland. His journey through the timber and transport industries reflected the changing face of rural trades in mid-20th-century Queensland.

From Bullock Teams to Timber Trucks

Before arriving in Woodford, the Campbells were no strangers to sawmills. In 1936, they lived and worked in Jimna—a thriving timber town established by Hancock & Gore. Bullock teams and lorries carted heavy timber loads to the mills, and it’s likely the brothers learned the trade firsthand among these rugged routines.
