Hinchcliffe’s Sawmill
A Chapter in Villeneuve’s Story
While most mill operators in the Villeneuve area had long-standing ties to the timber trade, Charles Hinchcliffe’s involvement was brief and unusual.
A former horse trainer and jockey, Hinchcliffe established a sawmill in Villeneuve around 1939.
Though little is known about the scope of his milling work, it offers a glimpse into the variety of people drawn into the timber industry during this era.

Local Historian Recalls
I had heard of Hinchcliffe. He was a horse trainer and a jockey and lived in a house belonging to Glen Kropp. I don’t know anything about him having a sawmill at Villeneuve.
