Roy Edwin Neumann

A Short-Lived Sawmill Venture at Neurum

In 1949, local timber hauler Roy Edwin Neumann tried his hand at sawmilling in Neurum. Though short-lived, his efforts form part of the rich tapestry of the Durundur region’s forestry history.

Originally from Cooroy, Roy and his wife Thelma settled in Neurum, where Roy continued his work in the timber industry. Logging at Mt Archer in 1947, Roy’s passion for the trade inspired him to open his own sawmill just two years later.

Despite his experience in timber hauling, Roy’s sawmill venture was not successful. By May 1949, he was advertising his Ford and timber trailer for sale. By 1952, the Neumanns had moved on to farming in Villeneuve, closing a short but noteworthy chapter in the region’s sawmilling story.
