Charlie Stewart’s Timber Tales

From Horses to Hardwood

In 1979, Frank Sampson sat down with Charlie Stewart—then 85 years old—to record his memories of life, work, and timber in the Woodford district. The result is a rich and colourful interview that brings to life sawmills, council work, race days, bullock teams, and local characters from a bygone era. This interview was originally found by the Caboolture Historical Society and kindly passed on to the Woodford Historical Society. It offers a rare and personal look at the people and places that helped shape the region’s history.

Sawmills Mentioned in the Interview:

  • Fredin’s Sawmill (A.A. Fredin) – Charlie worked here until he was sacked for refusing to lie about a timber log’s measurement.

  • Jack King’s Mill – Located where the Woodford Bowling Club stands today.

  • Binney and Davis Mill – Situated near the old loop line where trains turned around.

  • P.N. Lovf’s Mill – Lovf bought Jack King’s mill after its closure.

Timber Industry Highlights:

  • Timber Transport: Charlie recalls seeing up to 28 bullock teams lined up outside the Woodford Hotel.

  • The Largest Log: A massive 23-foot girth Crows Ash log from Mount Archer.

  • Bunya Pine History: A significant bunya pine used in the construction of the Durundur Homestead.

  • Early Machinery & Roadwork
